What it's for
Every time exam review comes around, I find that Canvas quizzes have often been muted by the instructor. Some professors never meant to hide them and simply forgot to open them back up, and sorting that out over email is slow, so the practice questions you already did can’t be reviewed before the exam. Copying and pasting from the web page gives you a jumbled layout full of useless clutter, and the HTML the browser saves is mixed in with the sidebar, navigation and all kinds of scripts, which makes it hard to search and awkward to bring into your notes.
I built this tool to solve, once and for all, the problem that quizzes are hard to reuse as study material. It started as a Python script that printed plain text in the terminal, went through a bare-bones GUI as a stopgap, and was finally rewritten entirely in Dart. The rewrite is easier to use and does more, and alongside the practical improvements the visual style got a consistent overhaul.
Now it quickly parses the messy page source, cleans it up and files it into a neatly formatted question bank in several formats. Whether you read it directly or feed it to an LLM to pull out the key points for last-minute exam prep, it saves a lot of time.
Why Dart and Flutter? Simply because I like Material Design, which is clean and looks good.
Question types and answer comparison
It fully supports the common Classic Canvas question types: single choice, multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, short answer, numerical and matching. The preview clearly compares what you answered with the official answers, and you can copy a single question or the whole quiz with one click. Note that question types from New Quizzes and third-party LTI plugins aren’t guaranteed to work yet.
How to use it
- 01
Download and unzip
Download the zip from Releases, unzip it and run CanvasQuizExporter.exe, keeping the folder intact. The app isn't code-signed, so if Windows blocks it on first launch, click "More info" and then "Run anyway".
- 02
Save the quiz page
Open the quiz page in your browser once the questions are showing, right-click and save it as "Webpage, Complete".
- 03
Drag it in and export
Drop the HTML file or a whole folder into the window for an instant preview, quick copying and export.
